Popular routes to Japan

Choosing your airport in Japan

Tokyo has two airports and they are not interchangeable. Haneda (HND) is the close one, roughly 30 minutes from central Tokyo by monorail or Keikyu line. Narita (NRT) is about 60 to 90 minutes out by Narita Express or highway bus. Fares into Narita are often cheaper, so it is worth comparing the total once you add the transfer. In Kansai, Kansai International (KIX) handles the international flights while Itami (ITM) is mostly domestic, which matters if you are connecting to Sapporo or Okinawa.

When flights to Japan cost the most

Demand drives the price curve more than distance does. Cherry blossom season from late March into mid April is the busiest stretch of the year, Golden Week at the end of April runs straight into it, and Obon in mid August plus the New Year holidays are the other two spikes. Late January through February and the stretch after Obon into early December are consistently the softest, which is when we usually see the cheapest transpacific fares. Set your dates first and let the results tell you which side of a spike you are on.

Booking flights to Japan: common questions

Is it cheaper to fly into Tokyo or Osaka?

Osaka is often slightly cheaper to reach because more capacity lands at Kansai, but the difference is usually small. If you are riding the shinkansen to Kyoto or Osaka anyway, price both and compare the rail fare as part of the total.

How far ahead should I book?

For peak periods (cherry blossom, Golden Week, Obon, New Year) earlier is almost always cheaper, and waiting rarely pays off because the cheap fare classes sell out first. Outside peak season the curve is flatter, so watching prices for a few weeks is reasonable.

Do you charge a booking fee?

No. We do not sell tickets. We search, you pick, and you book with the airline or agency that owns the fare. They pay us a referral commission, and the price you pay is the same as going to them directly.

One-way, round trip or multi-city?

Use the multi-city option for open-jaw trips, for example flying into Tokyo and home from Osaka. It is usually cheaper than two one-ways and it saves you backtracking across the country.
